10 Questions: Johnny Wujek

When news came that Johnny Wujek—the stylist behind Katy Perry’s sartorial choices—will be joining Tyra Banks and crew as creative consultant on the new season of America’s Next Top Model, we knew he’d spice things up. After all, he’s made KP’s hair colors look like the inside of a Skittles bag—going from pink to blue to purple. And with outfits to match. With his new endeavor (round of applause Mr. Wujek), we handed the mic over and had the Los Angeles-based stylist spill his 1 through 10.

ELLE: What is your favorite smell?
Johnny Wujek: I’m a sucker for vanilla extract.

ELLE: What do you consider the epitome of happiness?
JW: Having children.

ELLE: How do you define luxury?
JW: Five stars. Is there such thing as six?

LISTEN UP: EXITMUSIC

Passage is like a journey through a certain kind of human experience, in a way. It deals with a lot of death and separation, isolation from other people while you’re alive,” says Aleksa Palladino completely seriously, before breaking into laughter. She’s describing the debut album from Exitmusic, her band with co-founder (and husband) Devon Church, and while she’s not joking—Passage is indeed deep, dark, and incredibly grand in its sound—she also realizes how bleak she’s making it seem. The truth is, for all of its intense moments of yelping vocals, tinkling piano notes, and bellowing guitar lines that come crashing down like a wave, it’s also not a downer. “It’s going to be intense, but ultimately I didn’t feel like it’s a depressing album, personally,” pipes up Church, adding, “People [will] feel like they’re more connected to themselves.”

The beautiful brooding on the album, which is equal parts Radiohead, Portishead, and Beach House, is in part a product of the duo’s creative process, which can sometimes be like a couple’s therapy session. “Devon and I started writing music together a long time ago, and it was the way that we really started to experience each other and ourselves. So it just came from a really deep place, a place that you can’t necessarily talk about in conversation,” Palladino explains. The result may be confessional and moody, but it’s definitely not goth, no matter how many times people call it that. “Adam Green was like, ‘You guys are a goth band.’ And we’re like, No!” remembers Church.

Roman Polanski Debuts Prada Film at Cannes

Roman Polanski surprised Cannes yesterday by debuting a new short film before a festival screening of his 1979 film Tess. The three-minute film, called A Therapy, stars Ben Kingsley and Helena Bonham Carter as a therapist and his stylish, Prada-wearing patient, and marks a collaboration with the Italian fashion house.

“When I was asked to shoot a short movie for Prada, I did not think that I could really be myself, but the reality is that in the total freedom I was given, I had the opportunity to reunite my favorite group of people on set and just have fun,” said Polanski. “The chance to dwell on what the fashion world represents nowadays and the fact that it is accompanied by so many stereotypes is fascinating and at the same time a bit upsetting, but you definitely can not ignore it. It’s very refreshing to know that there are still places open to irony and wit and, for sure, Prada is one of them.” Afterwards, he told AFP of the film: “It’s a sort of anti-ad.” See it after the cut.
