Roman Polanski Debuts Prada Film at Cannes

Roman Polanski surprised Cannes yesterday by debuting a new short film before a festival screening of his 1979 film Tess. The three-minute film, called A Therapy, stars Ben Kingsley and Helena Bonham Carter as a therapist and his stylish, Prada-wearing patient, and marks a collaboration with the Italian fashion house.

“When I was asked to shoot a short movie for Prada, I did not think that I could really be myself, but the reality is that in the total freedom I was given, I had the opportunity to reunite my favorite group of people on set and just have fun,” said Polanski. “The chance to dwell on what the fashion world represents nowadays and the fact that it is accompanied by so many stereotypes is fascinating and at the same time a bit upsetting, but you definitely can not ignore it. It’s very refreshing to know that there are still places open to irony and wit and, for sure, Prada is one of them.” Afterwards, he told AFP of the film: “It’s a sort of anti-ad.” See it after the cut.

Hedi Slimane’s First YSL Collection Won’t Be Shown to Press

When Hedi Slimane’s appointment as Yves Saint Laurent’s new creative director was announced in March, his first designs for the brand were promised to debut in June. That’s still the case—but very few will get to see them so soon.

Both the women’s cruise and spring men’s collections will only be shown to buyers—not press, WWD reports, which means most of us will still have to wait a few more months before catching a YSL by Slimane collection. A house spokeswoman called the two collections “transitional”; Slimane, who has been designing in Los Angeles—not Paris, where YSL is based—apparently wants to make his first major statement for the house this fall, with the presentation of the woman’s Spring 2013 collection on the runway during Paris Fashion Week.

Natasha Poly’s Cannes Makeup: Runway to Red Carpet

As one of fashion’s top runway models, Natasha Poly has the smoldering-eyes thing down pat. On the Gucci fall 2012 catwalk, her unwavering stare was accompanied by pursed blackberry lips that accentuated razor-sharp cheekbones. Poly wore Gucci again over the weekend, at the Cannes Film Festival, only this time her steady gaze was offset by a radiant smile.

Sure, Poly’s eyes were rimmed with runway-ready black, but they appeared more elegant than edgy, thanks to a winged shape and softened texture: instead of heavy liner, her look was achieved using L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Eternal Black. For a flawless complexion, the L’Oréal Paris spokesmodel also wore the brand’s True Match Super-Blendable Makeup, which boasts SPF 17—something that undoubtedly appealed to her: “The one thing I always use is sunscreen,” she once told us. “I enjoy the sun, but I try to be careful.”
